Gilead Sciences is an American biotechnology company that discovers, develops and commercializes therapeutics. For many years since the company was founded, the company concentrated primarily on antiviral drugs to treat patients infected with HIV, hepatitis B, or influenza. The company had 2010 revenue of US$7.95 billion and 4,000 employees.

Chazey Partners reviewed and corrected issues with the Finance Shared Services Center in Ireland, reviewed and optimized the European human resources Shared Services center in Stockley Park, UK, and produced a detailed review, a complete assessment and recommendations for the global finance function. This was a very complex assignment where the team corrected issues related to the prior “technical” style Shared Services deployment that was weak on governance and change management, including issues with the transition from a JD Edwards to an Oracle ERP. Additional complexity was added by the multiple locations/countries, significant change management, organizational design, people evaluation, training, and establishment of a new client relationship management framework. This Shared Services Transformation review and implementation project also included process mapping/design, business analysis, benchmarking and best practice analysis.


Chazey Partners was invited to perform a Location Analysis Study for Gilead Sciences Inc in late 2013, focused on the Asia-Pacific region. The intent of the study was to prioritize a shortlist of potential locations for a shared service center in in Asia.

We were impressed by the Chazey team’s responsiveness and professionalism in reacting and managing this assignment at very short notice and with highly restricted timelines.

The Study Report we received clearly reflected their depth of first-hand experience and knowledge. In addition, the quality of insight they brought to the assignment resulted in a Study Report which was clear, comprehensive and put us in a position to make a decision on a very sound base.

We first engaged Chazey Partners on our Asia Hub initiative towards the end of 2013 when they were asked to perform a Location Analysis Study for the purpose of setting up a new Shared Services Center in the Asia Pacific Region. This helped us to reach our decision to locate our new Human Resources (HR) Shared Service Centre (SSC) in Hong Kong.

Then, in September 2014, we re-engaged Chazey Partners for the Business Case and Design of a new Human Resources Operations Hub to be located in Hong Kong. Then we re-engaged Chazey Partners in early 2015 to assist us with the actual Build, Deployment and Stabilization of this new Human Resources Operations Hub, to be called “HR Answer Asia”.

Our engagement with Chazey Partners on this particular initiative recently completed.

In effect, we engaged and partnered with Chazey right through conception, business case, design, build, deploy and stabilize for our new Asia Hub. The first phase transitioned support from North America and in-market activities for the Asia regional affiliates (Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the People’s Republic of China (PRC), Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand). HR Answer Asia went live for this initial phase on 24 August 2015 and was stabilized by 30 November 2015. The second phase transitioned support for Japan. This second phase went live 30 November 2015 and was stabilized in mid-February 2016.

We are delighted with our partnership with Chazey on this. The Chazey team, led by Phil Searle as engagement partner and Chas Moore as Project Manager, worked with myself, the HR and operational teams in both the US and Asia, and with senior management. Their hands on approach, highly relevant and in depth experience, collaborative style and on site resources in both the US and Asia was a major contributor to our success. Indeed the project has been so successful that we are now using it as a model for other projects globally, and holding this up as an example of “best practice”.

I would add that Chazey has been a key partner with Gilead Sciences for many years since 2008, and has assisted us with a number of other projects including reviewing and correcting certain issues with our finance Shared Services Center in Ireland, reviewing and optimizing the European human resources Shared Services center in Stockley Park, UK, the production of a detailed review, complete assessment and recommendations for the global finance function, including global FP&A, and support for the optimization of the worldwide finance operations (WFO) function.
